She Learns

Creating locally rooted pathways to learning for Afghan girls

2.2+ million Afghan girls are out of school.

Afghanistan is now the only country in the world to ban girls’ education beyond Grade 6 (around age 12). Millions have been pushed out of classrooms, with limited opportunities to continue learning or build a livelihood. The consequences extend far beyond the classroom. Education improves health, strengthens economies, and creates opportunities that benefit families and communities for generations.

Why we stay

For 20 years, we have worked in Afghanistan through periods of uneven progress, uncertainty, and now severe restriction. By building trusted local partnerships, investing in Afghan educators, and adapting to changing realities, we continue to expand access to education for girls and young women.

Education that adapts

She Learns combines girls’ primary education in public schools, community-based learning, and digital skills training to respond to different needs and contexts.

Our initiatives

PRIMARY EDUCATION
Quality primary education lays the foundation for everything that follows.

We work with under-resourced public primary schools across Kabul province to improve the quality of education for more than 3,200 children.

We recruit and fund female teachers, provide ongoing coaching and professional development, and equip classrooms with learning materials. By investing in both educators and classrooms, we strengthen the foundations children need to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to thrive.

In communities without sufficient public education services, our community-based classes provide girls with a safe, accessible pathway to primary education.

Girls’ Coding & Computer Courses (GCC)
When girls are barred from formal education, vocational courses become a lifeline.

We partner with trusted tech training institutions in Kabul to provide free courses for upper-secondary and university-aged girls and young women, combining online and in-person learning.

Education as a ray of hope through the eyes of a teacher.
“I want to learn something new every day. When I grow up, I want to help my community and encourage others to study. Learning is not just a lesson for me—it is the path to my dream.”
